BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee (BCBST) was looking to create a new, eye-catching version of its annual report. The BCBST client communications department had taken over the project, and wanted to showcase some design features that were not as easy to produce as it might look at first glance.
BCBST wanted a die-cut headline with the letters knocked out, a 4-inch pocket on the inside back cover, soft-touch coating on the front and back covers, and spot UV gloss on their logo. They also wanted a 100 percent solid on the inside cover, gutter jumps, and a solid PMS color on the edge of every page.
While this would be a difficult job for any printing company, we were up for the challenge. After the first round of proofs, we advised the client to soften the points of the die-cut letters in order to prevent them from curling. We also suggested that they widen some key spacing so the material between letters wouldn't tear during production.
The client's vision and our expertise combined to produce a stunningly beautiful annual report. BCBST was happy, and the report a great showpiece displaying how soft touch feels and looks with spot UV on white.
